Q: How did you first come across Chandra Lacombe, did you know of his music and projects before you began your working relationship?
FI: I had the pleasure of meeting Chandra back in 2007 during a spiritual retreat in São Roque. It was such a transformative experience! That’s where I first discovered his beautiful music and inspiring teachings. I gradually found my way into the community around him, helping with organization and communication for his projects. Over the years, I had the joy of designing several album covers, hymn books, and concert posters. It’s been almost two decades of friendship now, and I’ve loved collaborating on several of his solo projects.
Q: What steps do you first undertake when creating art based on music, do you listen and let the music inspire the creation or do you already have visuals in mind when accepting a cover art project?
FI: For me, music - just like all forms of art - has to be deeply felt before I can translate it into visuals. I enjoy using music as a form of meditation; it really helps me tap into my creativity. As I listen, the melodies and rhythms inspire me to visualize potential ideas. From there, I dive into iconographic research to capture and enhance the essence and symbolism of the music. It’s a truly joyful process.
Q: The art you've created for Chandra has referenced more spiritual leanings, of course in part due to the nature of the songs he creates, but do you work with this kind of inspiration elsewhere in your artistic life also?
FI: Absolutely! I always strive to capture the deep essence of each project. I see design as a wonderful tool for exploration and experimentation, especially with themes that speak to me. The spiritual and sacred realms have always fascinated me with their richness of symbols and meanings. Ever since I was a child, drawing has been my primary form of expression, and that journey of self-discovery continues to shape my designs. It’s fantastic to see how my spiritual exploration integrates with projects that might not be overtly spiritual. It feels like a Dharma that I’m honored to embrace responsibly. In my collaborations with Chandra, where I've designed several covers, this blend of conceptual and spiritual inspiration flows naturally. It’s such a fulfilling and enjoyable experience to bring these ideas to life together!
Q: As a visual artist, what would be your dream project to create in the music world?
FI: In the music industry, creating a music video would be an incredible opportunity! I have always been passionate about the level of experimentation and the depth of messages that can be conveyed through the combination of visuals and music. I would love to bring this idea to life one day.
